BYD Unveils Revolutionary Battery System Capable of Charging EVs in Five Minutes

Prime Highlights:

BYD plans to build over 4,000 charging stations to support the new technology, enhancing the EV charging experience.

The new charging system outperforms Tesla’s Superchargers and Mercedes-Benz’s fast-charging capabilities, offering faster charging speeds.

Key Background:

BYD Co., a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has introduced a groundbreaking battery and charging system that enables electric cars to charge almost as quickly as conventional vehicles refuel. The system was showcased on the new Han L sedan, which achieved an impressive 470 kilometers (292 miles) of range in just five minutes during testing. Chairman and founder Wang Chuanfu announced that vehicles featuring this advanced technology will be available for sale starting next month.

This innovation could be a game-changer for the EV industry, particularly for consumers concerned about long charging times. The new charging system, which BYD plans to incorporate into a range of future electric models, offers significant advantages over existing fast-charging solutions. For instance, Tesla’s Superchargers provide up to 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes, while Mercedes-Benz’s new CLA electric sedan offers 325 kilometers in 10 minutes. In comparison, BYD’s system offers unparalleled speed, positioning the company ahead of its competitors.

To support the widespread adoption of this technology, BYD plans to build over 4,000 charging stations tailored to accommodate the new platform. The first models to feature this ultra-fast charging capability will be the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV, which are priced at 270,000 yuan ($37,338) and 280,000 yuan, respectively. These vehicles are expected to hit the market in April.

This announcement further solidifies BYD’s position as a key player in the global EV market. With sales of more than 318,000 passenger vehicles in February 2025—an increase of 161% compared to the same month last year—BYD has become the leading carmaker in China, with a market share approaching 15%. Industry analysts predict that the company’s next-generation vehicles, powered by this cutting-edge battery technology, could significantly boost demand and enhance its competitive edge in the rapidly growing EV sector.

As BYD continues to innovate with advancements in both powertrain technology and driver-assistance features, the company is poised to maintain its momentum and potentially surpass competitors in the global EV market.
