The host of Sky News, Steve Price, predicts a “flooded” entry of Chinese electric cars into the automotive market. According to Mr. Price, they are “cheaper” in Australia than they are in other countries like the US and Europe. Paul Gover, a senior motoring journalist, spoke with Mr. Price about China’s sale of electric cars to Australia.
Every year, Australia imports hundreds of thousands of electric cars from China, surpassing the demand for domestically produced Ford and Holden automobiles. Tony Weber, CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, claims that China is now the third largest supplier of automobiles to Australia.
“As of now in 2024, more than 80% of all electric vehicles sold in Australia are manufactured in China,” Weber stated to Chris Kohler, the finance editor of 9News. “It’s good for Australian consumers because it’s putting more choice into the market and it’s putting downward pressure on prices as competition rises.”
Weber claimed that because of “an incredibly open market” with few tariffs and non-tariff barriers, Australians were able to buy cars for less money than those in other nations. “Therefore the Australian consumer gets the benefit of the best quality product from around the world at the cheapest possible prices,” Weber stated. For instance, a BYD Seal costs roughly $50,000 when purchased in Australia, but buyers in Europe may have to pay up to $90,000.
“We continue to see the increase in EVs, they’re now eight per cent of the market last month,” Weber stated. “We’re also seeing the rise in hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and around 24 per cent of all vehicles were a fuel-efficient product.”Consumer demand for low-emission cars is changing the market, which is beneficial for the environment.”
