Data Centre Power Consumption to Surge 6 times in the coming Decade: CEO John Pettigrew

The National Grid predicts that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing would lead to an increase in energy consumption.

Both rely on data centres, which are warehouses full of computer systems.

According to CEO John Pettigrew, the electricity used by data centres would expand sixfold over the next decade.
He stated that the grid was becoming “constrained” and that “bold action” was required to build a network capable of dealing with “dramatically” increasing demand.

“Future growth in foundational technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing will mean larger scale, energy-intensive computing infrastructure,” he said.

In a lecture uploaded on LinkedIn on Tuesday, the CEO of National Grid stated that grid transformation is at a “pivotal moment” due to increased demand for energy-intensive technology and increased use of heat pumps and electric vehicles.

“Today, just like in the 1950s, we find ourselves with a network that’s constrained,” he went on to say.

“Demand on the grid is growing dramatically, and forecast to double by 2050 as heat, transport and industry continue to electrify.”

The high-voltage transmission network of cables and pylons that comprises the UK’s “supergrid” is now almost 70 years old.

To attain global targets for net zero emissions by 2050, grid operators must modernize current infrastructure to accommodate future consumer demand for power while also connecting to renewable energy sources.

We are in the midst of “a moment in time that requires innovative thinking and bold actions to create a transmission network for tomorrow’s future,” according to Mr. Pettigrew.
