As part of IT giant Oracle’s new efforts to strengthen the nation’s digital workforce, up to 10,000 professionals and students in Singapore will receive free training in artificial intelligence (AI) over the course of the next three years.
The initiative, which solidifies the company’s 36-year engagement in the island nation, is anticipated to have a major impact on Singapore’s plan to treble the number of AI practitioners in the country to 15,000 over the following five years.
As stated in Singapore’s updated AI plan, which was unveiled in December 2023, this level of labor is required to take advantage of the new prospects brought forth by generative AI technologies.
In a rare and exclusive interview with The Straits Times, Oracle chief executive Safra Catz, 61, who is in Singapore to meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, customers and other local officials, said: “Education is one of the things we really care about.”

She cited Oracle’s history of educational investment and mentioned that the company operates a public high school on its Redwood City, California, campus, a first for the industry’s largest tech companies, many of which have instead integrated computer education and products into regular classrooms.
The US$43 million (S$58 million) Design Tech High School opened its doors in 2018 on the Oracle campus. Students can earn internships at the company and staff mentoring. Classes on subjects like robotics and wearables are also offered to students.
Over the past 15 years, Oracle has aided in the computer instruction of 14 higher education institutions in Singapore.
Oracle extended an offer of up to 300 internships and apprenticeships to graduates and students from five polytechnics in this region in April 2023. At the conclusion of their three-year term with Oracle, which employs over 1,000 people in Singapore, as well as its business partners and clients, the trainees will be among the first to be given consideration for jobs.
Up to 10,000 seats at Oracle University, which will give rigorous, free fundamental training in AI, cloud computing, cyber security, and data management, are being made available as part of the most recent educational initiative. It will cost money to obtain professional-level training and credentials, such as the recently introduced Gen AI Professional Certification.
