Key Background:

Swissport International, a global leader in airport ground services and air cargo handling, has announced a substantial expansion of its air cargo operations in Australia, alongside its imminent entry into the New Zealand market. As part of this growth, Swissport will open a new air cargo facility at Auckland Airport in late March 2025, marking the company’s first presence in New Zealand.

In Australia, Swissport has established a new facility at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport, covering 9,366 square meters. This facility boasts direct airside access, providing a strategic advantage for freight forwarders. Additionally, Swissport has upgraded its operations at Sydney Airport, expanding its handling capacity to over 4,500 square meters with a newly renovated facility.

These expansions are designed to meet the increasing air cargo demand in the region, offering enhanced operational efficiency and tailored solutions for diverse cargo needs. Joel Greig, Swissport’s General Manager Cargo for Australia and New Zealand, emphasized that the new facilities are equipped with advanced temperature-controlled spaces, state-of-the-art equipment, and modern technology to ensure safe, efficient operations. Greig also noted that these developments will allow Swissport to strengthen its position as a key logistics partner in the region.

In Auckland, Swissport’s new facility will feature the airport’s most advanced X-ray machine, equipped with high-penetration, dual-view technology to enhance security and detection of explosives and narcotics. Swissport currently provides services to 29 domestic and international airline customers across 18 airports in Australia and New Zealand. In 2024, the company handled over 226,000 flights and served 10.16 million passengers, employing more than 3,600 aviation professionals in the region. The expansion underscores Swissport’s commitment to supporting the growing air cargo industry and enhancing service quality across the supply chain.
