Key Background:
Volkswagen’s Scout Motors has garnered over 50,000 refundable reservation deposits for its upcoming electric Terra pickup truck and Traveler SUV, marking a strong consumer interest in its revived American brand. The vehicles, which will be released in 2027, will be available as either all-electric or extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), the latter incorporating both an electric motor and a traditional internal combustion engine. Scout has received a strong response at a time when electric vehicle (EV) reservations have slowed compared to earlier years.
Scout’s CEO, Scott Keogh, revealed that approximately 70% of reservations have been for the Traveler SUV, a favorable sign for the brand. While the company did not disclose the precise mix of all-electric versus EREV reservations, Keogh expressed satisfaction with the numbers. The EREV vehicles are expected to offer over 500 miles of range, while the all-electric models will have a range of up to 350 miles. Both models are anticipated to be priced below $60,000.
Scout is a key component of Volkswagen’s strategy to grow its presence in the U.S. market, which currently stands at just 4% of total sales. Volkswagen’s CEO, Oliver Blume, emphasized the potential for expansion, particularly with the introduction of the Terra and Traveler, which are positioned to compete with outdoor-focused vehicles from brands like Jeep and Rivian.
The company is currently building a $2 billion factory in South Carolina, set to produce 200,000 vehicles annually. Additionally, Scout will utilize batteries from a joint venture between Volkswagen and a Canadian battery manufacturer. The vehicles will also feature software and electrical architecture developed in collaboration with Rivian, another Volkswagen partner. This investment positions Scout as a strong player in the competitive EV market.
